S.l.n., ca. 1625

Engr., 38 x 52 cm (sm. tears in foldings, sl. dampstained in upper margin).

Inserted in an edition of a Dutch "Statenbijbel" (incomplete, title missing, repaired tears, sl. toned). Binding rebacked, with corner-pieces and clasps.

Variant of Petrus Plancius' famous world map (1st ed.: 1590), that made part of Plancius' 2nd and much more attractive map series with lavish borders engraved by B. van Deutecum (1st ed.: 1604). 3rd st. by the enigmatic D.R.M. Matthes, suggested to be Dr. Rudolf Mercator Mathematicus.
Rare given the fact that most maps prepared by Plancius were not reprinted in standard atlas form. Instead this map is still inserted in its original context, the Dutch Statenbijbel incl. the Apocrypha, presumably a pirated edition with "seven nieuwe Bybel-Caerten" (7 new Bible maps of which 2 maps are missing: "Tabula geographica [...] Israelitarum ex Aegyptum" and "Tabula geographica [...] Israeli"), printed in 1643 by E. Cloppenburg, J.F. Stam, or F. Lieshout. Besides the world map, this Bible copy further includes:
1. Tabula geographica, in qua paradisus [...] Petrus Plancius. Amsterdam, J. E. Cloppenborch, ca. 1604. 1st st.
2. Waerachtige beschrijvinge vande wijdvermaerde Conincklicke Hooft Stadt Ierusalem [...]. D.R.M. Mathes. Amsterdam, J. E. Cloppenborch, ca. 1725. 2nd st.
3. Tabula geographica in qua regiones Cananae [...]. D.R.M. Mathes. Amsterdam, J. E. Cloppenborch, ca. 1725. 2nd st.
4. Tabula geographica in qua omnes regiones [...] quorum mentio fit in Actis et Epistolis Apostolorum, et Apocalypsi. D.R.M. Mathes. 2nd st.
Ref. Shirley 177. - UVA OTM: HB-KZL O.K. 112. - Kaarten in Bijbels 129. - STCN.
