Ogura Magobei, Meiji 18 [1885]

2 prints chûban (22,7 x 17,3 cm), yoko-e (horizontal), n. 26 and 35.

Framed under passe-partout (not studied outside frame).

Ginkô (active 1874-1897) studied under the painter Goseda Hôryû, who worked in a Western style. He produced in a variety of genres, including portraits of beauties, landscapes, book illustrations and satirical works. A large number of his works deals with contemporary events such as the Satsuma Rebellion and the First Sino-Japanese War. His most popular work is the series "Abbreviated Japanese History", published from 1885 to 1889.

Joined: 1. Shiranuri monogatari [The tale of Shiranuri]. [Probably 1867]. Half chûban (10 x 16,5 cm), tate-e (vertical). Right side of a diptych of Kabuki-e: actor with sword and spider (faintly soiled).-- 2. [Eisen, Keisai (?)] - Cartoon: Two warriors on horses. Tokyo, M. Nakazawa, [ca. 1830], yotsugiri (19 x 12,7 cm), tate-e (vertical), framed print. Attribution to Eisen on the back of the frame. (4 prints all framed)
