4to: [16, engr. title incl.]-547 [= 549] pp. (light marg. damp stains, occ. soiling).

Contemp. limp vellum, flat spine titled in ink, red marbled edges (soiling).

First of two editions printed by the Giunta in 1584, with the dedication beginning with "Le Metamorfosi d'Ovidio [...]". Nicely illustrated with copper-engravings by Giacomo Franco: title within an architectural border with a medallion portrait of the translator Giovanni Andrea dell'Anguillara, supported by angels at head, standing figures of Mercury and Minerva at the sides, and Giunta's armorial device at the bottom, 15 full-page engr. (one at the beginning of each book) combining multiple scenes of the books with the figures labelled and within an elaborate scrollwork border with grotesques, 15 cartouches containing the "Argomento" with scrollwork borders (4 different). The translator dell'Anguillara (1517-1570) modernised the "Metamorphoses" converting the verse form to the "ottava rima" and introducing into the text allusions "to various contemporary works of Italian literature fashionable in his time" (Goldschmidt). Accompanied by annotations by Giuseppe Orologgi, and "argomenti" and notes by Francesco Turchi.
Ref. Edit16 48411. - Mortimer, Italian, 343. - STC Italy p. 482. - Gamba 1556. - Goldschmidt 167. - Not in Pettas, Adams.
Prov. Henri Romme, "A vistpoca (?) dans le Milanois, le 22 febvrier 1636" (ms. ownership entry).
