Beschrijving lot

London, ca. 1795-1805

Drawing, pen and brown ink with brown wash, 14,7 x 22,9 cm, vellum paper, unsigned.

Under 19th-c. passe-partout.

Thomas Rowlandson is considered as one of the most prolific British caricaturist painters of the late Georgian Era, noted for his political satire and social observation. Before fully embarking a career as a satirical artist, Rowlandson produced some highly refined landscapes and topographical drawings of the English countryside, between 1793 and 1807. The present sheet with a horse carriage, which fits well within this period was exhibited at the Fogg Art museum Harvard, The Ringling Museum of Art Florida and the Maine State Museum. Comparison with, for example, the rendering of tree leaves in "Landscape with Lake", at the Tate Gallery (N04356), leaves no doubt about this attribution.
Prov. Christie's Sale (03/12/2002, Lot 59). - Sold by art dealer C. & J. Goodfriend (New York), date unknown.
