Auguste Brouet was a French artist, engraver and illustrator (1872 -1941). He became a pupil of Gustave Moreau at the School of Fine Arts of Paris, and was then taught by Auguste Delâtre and started etching, showing a particular talent for it. He exhibited his work at the 1910 Venice Biennale. Brouet left over four hundred prints. He was influenced by Rembrandt, drawing much inspiration from him in his etching technique. He found his subjects in popular areas, particularly in the village of Montmartre with its prostitutes, dancers, circus, modest interiors, etc. During the First World War, Brouet made some of the most captivating representations of soldiers' lives in the trenches. All 6 etchings in this lot are early impressions with strong contrasts.
