Various sizes, techniques and conditions.
Diverse ensemble of designs and sketches by the Belgian Symbolist painter Karel van Belle (1884-1959). His works range from portraits to historical and religious paintings and show the influence of the Symbolist movement in their vivid colours, narrative theme and often fantastical nature. His oeuvre centres mainly on paintings of women, from subjects dressed in contemporary fashion to the Madonna or Joan of Arc. The present lot contains drawings with landscapes of German towns (e.g. Dusseldorf and Nuremberg), vignettes, a bookplate and representations of women as mysterious femmes fatales or fairy tale-like creatures, often oscillating between Realism, Symbolism and Art Nouveau. Some signed and dated 1914.
