Beschrijving lot

Nuremberg, A. Koberger, 12 February 1477

Folio: 162 ff. (on 863), ca. 57 ll. (dampstaining and soiling throughout, some wormtracks and wormholes).

Loose.

Part I (incomplete) only of the third dated edition (1st: 1473) of this theological encyclopedia by the Italian Dominican Rainerius de Pisis (d. 1351); which is a close reprint of Koberger's edition of 1474. Ill.: some nice larger initials with blue and red penwork, some capitals highlighted in red, initials and paragraph marks supplied in the same colour. The "Pantheologia" should be considered one of the longest books ever composed in the Middle Ages, containing something in the region of 1 350 000 words (Rhodes). This work was a great success during the 1470's, with five editions of this massive production printed in less than 4 years (1473-1477). The only copy of this edition held in Belgium was destroyed during the bombing of the University Library of Leuven during WWII.
