BOCCACCIO, Giovanni

Bocace de la généalogie des dieux [...] [transl. by Laurent de Premierfait].

Paris, Ph. Le Noir, 26 September 1531

4to: 228-[6] ff. (occ. minor spotting, 2 woodcuts sl. trimmed, ff. 1-2 and last remargined).

19th-c. brown morocco by Francis Bedford, covers ruled with blind and gilt fillets and with corner pieces, gilt orn. spine with raised bands, gilt inside dentelles, a.e.g. (sl. rubbed). In a brown cloth box. In very good condition.

Second French edition based on the text originally published by Antoine Vérard in 1498. Printed in bastards on 2 columns and ill. with 1 title (printed in black and red), surrounded by a woodcut frame representing the Judgment of Pâris after Urs Graf (signed with a cross of Lorraine), 12 large woodcuts depicting the major episodes of mythology, 25 smaller showing i.a. gods and goddesses in the Pantheon, a large printer device on last f. and numerous woodcut initials throughout. The woodcuts come mainly from Vérard's incunable edition. Three of them can be attributed to the master Gabriel Salmon from Lorraine (fl. 1504-1542): the sick man (f. XXv), the hunting scene (f. LXXXVIIr) and the pair of lovers (f. CXLIXv), re-used from Pierre Gringore's "Menus propos" (Le Noir, 1521). The ed. was shared with Jean Petit (some copies bearing his name instead of Le Noir's on title).
