Collection of letters (1st ed.: 1607) on human beauty, love, compassion, death etc. Isabella Andreini (1562-1604) was an actress, member of the Compagnia dei Comici Gelosi, a theatre company that performed Commedia dell'arte for the highest social circles of Italy and France. From the beginning she played enamoured woman, "prima donna innamorata" and was one of the women who developed improvisation. She married Francesco Andreini who became director of the Gelosi in 1589.
