Description du lot

Sevilla, H. Diaz, 1571

2 parts in 1 vol., folio: [4]-142 [= 138], 130 ff. (gnawed at 3 bl. endpapers, first title: upper margin (blank) of title cut, upper part and right margin stained, engr. coat of arms pasted on margins; minor browning and spotting; upper corner first ff. stained, right margins of first and last ff. dampstained; some brown spots on ff. 64-65).

Contemp. limp vellum (loosening, sm. spots, some sm. tears), ink titled flat spine. Good copy, in its first binding.

First edition of this important work on the history of Peru, and for the early history of all of Latin America by Fernandez de Palencia (1520-1581), Spanish conqueror and historian. He took up a military career and went to Peru shortly after the conquest. Extremely rare because "this work was forbidden to be circulated and ordered to be destroyed by the Council of the Indies" (Sabin). It contains information on Andres Hurtado de Mendoza, who was viceroy for 6 years (1555-1561), the insurrection of Francisco Hernandez Giron, the rebellion of Gonzalo Pizarro, the administration of Pedro de la Gasca, Inca rulers and their religious customs. Illustrated with large woodcut arms of Spain on both title pages. Autograph signature of the author on last leaf (some copies have also a signature on the first title, here problably hidden behind the engr. arms or cut).
Ref. Sabin 24133. - Palau 89549. - Alden/Landis 571/10. - Leclerc, Bibl. Americana 1733 ("livre fort rare et très-important"). - Catalogo BNE. - BL. - Not in Machiels.
Prov. Ownership entries on title, some erased and hidden by pasted engr. coat of arms. - "Domingo" written at first endpaper.
