First edition of this interesting and beautifully illustrated series with plates produced during the great period of French colour printing. The title appears to have been loosely interpreted, and consequently the work was expanded to include grapes, melons, palm trees, pineapples, pomegranates, bananas, and other interesting but non-medicinal plants. F.P. Chaumeton (1775-1819) was a French army physician, pharmacist, and botanist. He worked on several notable medical publications apart from this one. Fellow botanist J.L.M. Poiret (1755-1834) collaborated with him on this project, perhaps accounting for its wide-ranging scope, far beyond mere medical botany. Ill. with 424 (of 425) coloured engr. pl. and 2 engr. fold. tables. The detailed illustrations, each with its own tissue guard, were executed by Anne-Ernestine Panckoucke (the editor's wife) and P.J.F. Turpin, both gifted botanical illustrators and pupils of Pierre Joseph Redouté (1749-1850).
