919. [Travels - America]

GRYNAEUS, Simon; HUTTICHIUS, Johannes

Novus orbis regionum ac insularum veteribus incognitarum, una cum tabula cosmographica, & aliquot aliis consimilis augmenti libellis [...].

Basel, J. Hervagius, 1537 [1536 in colophon]

Folio: [48]-600-[2] pp.; 1 map (wormhole in lower margin and in world map, some dampstains at inner margin).

Old mottled calf, gilt stamped spine, sprinkled edges (upper spine broken, sl. used).

1537 edition of one of the first anthologies of the lands and peoples of the Americas edited by Johann Huttich (1490-1544) with preface by S. Grynaeus (1493-1541). With descriptions of the voyages of Alvise da Cadomosto, Marco Polo, C. Columbus, A. Vespucci, e.g. and with Maximilianus Transylvanus' letter on Magellan's circumnavigation. Illustrated with 2 woodcuts in text by Hans Holbein and numerous woodcut initials. Our copy includes the highly decorative world map "Typus Cosmographicus Universalis", normally printed on 2 sheets. Our copy is printed on 1 sheet. Therefore it is most probably a later, but very good copy printed on old paper. Robert Shirley attributed the map to Sebastian Munster whereas the fine border illustrations would have been engraved by Hans Holbein the Younger. This map does not, cartographically speaking, reflect the most recent knowledge of the day: North America is shown narrow and elongated and is labelled Terra de Cuba. Ref. Sabin IX:34103. - Brunet IV:132. Prov. Faucharius (ms. note).
