Description du lot

Sm. 8vo: 26-[6 bl.] pp. (foxing, numerous on pp. 8-9, p. 16 soiled and title slightly, one stain on p. 4).

Mod. sheep, marbled paper covers, gilt-ruled and titled spine with raised bands (front joint splitting, leather loosening to lower part).

Very scarce, we only listed 6 copies in public libraries, anonymous letter in Italian written from Binche 31 August 1549, relating the contemporary triumphant entry of Charles V, his son Philip II and the imperial court into Binche the 22 August. This event was part of the "Triomphes de Binche", celebration days organised by Mary of Hungary in honour of her brother and especially of Philip II of Spain, in the aim to make him accepted by the magistrates and nobles of the region as future ruler. The festivities were composed of fastuous receptions, balls, tournaments and a fictious siege in Mariemont. The court left Binche heading to Mons the 31 August. Very interesting testimony of these celebrations that had an immediate resonance in Europe, as evidence the 8 contemporary accounts of it (2 in French, 2 in Italian, 3 in Spanish and 1 in German). A French commented edition of this letter in Italian was published in 1878 by Charles Ruelens.
