Cont. calf, gilt roll-stamp on covers, gilt decorated spines on raised bands, brown sprinkled edges (joints and spines slightly rubbed, some scratches, joints starting to split).

Smith's theory (1st 1759) provides the ethical, philosophical, psychological and methodological foundations of his later works (i.a. The Wealth of Nations, Essays on Philosophical Subjects, and Lectures on Justice, Police, Revenue and Arms). It is divided in 7 parts on the property of action; merit and demerit; judgment concerning our own sentiments and conduct and the sense of duty; effect of utility upon the sentiment of approbation; influence of custom and fashion upon the sentiments of moral approbation and disapprobation; virtue; and the systems of moral philosophy.
