Amsterdam, W. and J. Blaeu, 1647 (- 1648)

4 vol., large folio: [11], [4], [1], [5] ff., 120 + 92 + 64 + 58 = 334 maps, delicately contemp. gilt and hand-coloured (engr. title of the Low Countries missing, engr. titles of Northern Europe, Italy and the British Isles with sm. repairs, occ. wormhole and/or corner missing, folded maps occ. with tears on foldings, some corners or margins repaired, occ. a bit browned and/or foxed, some pencil scribbling and occ. drollery in vol. 4, mostly on text pp. and on the map "Westmoria comitatus").

Contemp. ivory vellum, gilt-decorated covers and spine (vol. 2-4 sl. damaged with heads and tails (partly) missing, in particular the spine of vol. 3 (also undulated) and a sm. hole in the spine of vol. 4, otherwise only a few tr. of use).

A rare and fine set of the French edition of Blaeu's "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" (1647) with 6 parts in 4 volumes: Northern Europe and Germania (part 1, 84 pl.) and the Low Countries (part 2, 36 pl.) in vol. 1, France (part 3, 48 pl.), Spain and the Continents (part 4, 44 pl.) in vol. 2, Italy (part 5, 64 pl.) in vol. 3 and the 4th British Isles volume (part 6, 58 pl., dated 1648). With 5 (of 6) engr. titles and all 334 engr. maps. This edition has the inserting maps from the appendix with newly printed text with the appropriate numbers and signatures. The running footers are in italics. The maps of the Arctic, Silesia Inferior, Luxembourg, Cambrai are in the 2nd state, Brasilia [9850:2B] and Paraguay [9900:2B] are earlier states. The world map and 4 maps of the continents have elaborate ornamentation, in casu ornate border panels with the sun, moon and the five known planets, the four elements, the four seasons and the seven wonders of the ancient world for the world map and with towns and costumes for the continents.
