Description du lot

Amsterdam, P. Mortier, [1705]

Large folio: 12 pp., 94 pl., old hand-coloured (dampstained margins, sl. browned).

Modern mottled calf, gilt decorated.

Remarkable enlarged first edition of P. Mortier's atlas of ancient and modern geography, with maps by N. Sanson, P. de la Rue, G. Delisle and P. Duval. With an engr. allegorical title, 2 letterpress titles (Lat. and Fr.), a Latin and Fr. "Au lecteur", a printed index completely overpasted listing 100 pl. (3 titles, 3 text pl., 94 maps), and all 94 engr. maps, incl. a world map, the Holy Land, Paradise, the dioceses of the Early Church, the Roman Empire, the Trojan War, etc. and in particular the Americas as the legendary Atlantis. Compared to Koeman's 1st ed., this atlas has 5 supplementary pl. which are also listed in the index: 1. Civitas Leucorum sive Pagus Tullensis. - 2. Kalendarium Graecum - Hebraicum (N. Haring). - 3. Kalendarium Juliano-Romanum perpetuum (F. Halma, 1700). - 4. Theatrum historicum, pars occidentalis (G. Delisle). - 5. Theatrum historicum, pars orientalis. The Fr. title indicates "On y a encore ajouté un calendrier hebreu, grec & romain". Unlike these additions, this is not the later 2nd ed. by Covens and Mortier because each map (except 18. "Situs terrae Canaan" without imprint) bears the imprint of P. Mortier (not changed into "J. Covens & C. Mortier", 2nd ed.) and has handwritten page numbers (not engr.).
Ref. Koeman III Mor 4. - Phillips n° 5628. - Shirley T.CLER-1a.
Prov. Chateau de Rosny (bookpl.). - Collector's stamp.
