Description du lot

17th c

Oil on copper, 16,1 x 11,3 cm (copperplate), 21,5 x 17,0 cm (frame), unsigned, on banderole of staff "ECCE AGNUS DEI", below arms "IN HOC BACUL. TRANSIVI" (few spots).

In sculpted frame (not studied outside frame). Good condition.

John the Baptist sitting with the Lamb of God. At bottom left the motto and arms of the van Sengelbeeck family, containing a crowned cross in a flaming heart crossing a creek ('beek'). Singelbeek is a locality near Hasselt and the similar family name originates from this area. The refined painting was probably commissioned by or a gift to Jan van Sengelbeeck (d. 1643). This Hasselt-born theologian became chaplain of the St Andrew's Church in Antwerp and was burried in the Beguinage Church in Hasselt. The same combination of Jan's patron saint with the family arms was used on a 17th-c. commemorative coin with his name.
