Description du lot
1514
Engraving, 23,7 x 15,2 cm, laid paper, signed and dated "1514 / AD" (cut at top and left, trimmed inside platemark at right, trimmed outside platemark at bottom, 2 very sm. light brown stains at bottom left, few spots, few very light sm. creases, few spots of thin paper, few microscopic holes).
Hinged to passe-partout at upper edges and in gilt frame. Good impression and condition. A milestone in the history of printmaking.
The patron saint of students, scholars and librarians in an interior with his attributes such as a cardinal's hat, crucifix, skull and lion. One of the three "Meisterstiche", Albrecht Dürer's (1471-1528) most famous and relatively large engravings from 1513-1514 that demonstrate his mastery of the burin. This exceptional print displays his ability to engrave light, perspective and animals. From the original plate with a few small scratches as described by Meder (states E and F), but before the plate was really worn.
