Description du lot

S.l., [ca. 1640]

Obl. 8vo: 242 pp., pen and brown ink, on laid paper, in French, title and coats of arms enhanced with watercolour and gouache, a few coats of arms on small papers laid down on the ff., mod. pencil pagination (some stains and marg. soiling, some marg. restorations without loss).

Mod. half vellum, marbled paper on boards (inner joints restored). In mod. slipcase. Good condition.

Richly illustrated armorial with a superbly framed title and very numerous large, finely executed coats of arms, accompanied by very detailed historical and genealogical notices, all laid out in 2 or 3 columns and following a strictly chronological order from St Vincent and St Waudru in the 7th century to the end of the 1630's. The work thus forms a true chronicle, which begins with the words: "Après plusieurs recherces des comtes et comtesses de Haynau, mon esprit at fait un vol dans le ciel, ou il at rencontré St Vincent et Ste Waudru". In addition to the counts of Hainaut, bailiffs, provosts and principal officers of Mons, Valenciennes and Ath, the armorial also includes the sovereigns and governors general of the Netherlands, from the dukes of Burgundy to the archdukes Albert and Isabella. The manuscript, by at least two different hands, was probably completed around the year 1640, the latest date mentioned in the entries being 1639 (see p. 229). The anonymous author is a contemporary of the Montois historian François Vinchant (1582-1635), whose more extensive "Annales de la province et comté de Hainaut" was published in 1648 (for the part from Roman times to the abdication of Charles V in 1555). A few handwritten copies of our armorial, in a larger format, have circulated, but it seems to have remained unpublished.
