4to: [6-2 bl.]-135- pp. (toned, dampstained and soiled, parts of C2, D1, G4, K4 torn off with loss of text or part of ill.).

Mod. red shagreen, gilt flat spine (spine faded). Acceptable copy.

Very rare original ed. (1 of 2 in the same year) of one of the earliest works on teratology. The author (d. 1620), the son of Johann Schenck von Grafenberg (1530-1598), another medical writer, was physician to the Count of Hanau-Lichtenberg, practising in Hagenau (Alsatia). His book is divided into two sections, the first on human, the second on animal abnormalities. Most examples are from the 16th c., and for each the date and place of birth are given with relevant medical details. Engr. device on title, engr. illustrations (6 full-page, 51 half-page) by Theodor de Bry (1528-1598) numbered to 98, one with overlay.
