From the series "Voyage en Orient, vues de Jérusalem et des lieux saints en Palestine" by the French industrial, amateur photographer and politician L. de Clercq (1836-1901), who was interested in archaeology and photography from an early age. He was invited to accompany the young historian Emmanuel-Guillaume Rey on a government-sponsored expedition to the crusader castles of Syria and Asia Minor. Aware of the potential contribution of photography to archaeological research, Rey thought that Clercq would prove a valuable travel companion for his skill as a photographer as well as for his friendship (Met Museum).
