Later quarter sheep with corners, marbled paper on covers, spine with 6 raised bands, red leather title label, sp. edges (corners rubbed, bands sl. rubbed, joints starting to split). Mod. slipcase. Good copy.

Later edition of the collected Latin medical works of the famous, pioneering anatomist and surgeon known in medical science as "The Father of Embryology" Fabrizi d'Acquapendente (1533-1619). Ill. with an engr. vign. on title, an engr. author's portrait and 61 engr. pl. of which 12 fold. showing the processes of several parts of the body such as pregnancy, viewing, hearing, speaking etc. Fabricius studied at the University of Padua. He was a private teacher of anatomy in Padua, and became professor of surgery and anatomy at the university. Among his students were William Harvey (1578-1657) and Adriaan van den Spiegel (1578-1625). By dissecting animals, Fabricius investigated the formation of the fetus, the structure of the food pipe, stomach and intestines, and the peculiarities of the eye, the ear, and the larynx. He contributed also much to the field of surgery. Though he never actually performed a tracheotomy, his writings include descriptions of the surgical technique similar to that used today.
