4to: [24]-305-[25] pp. (some min. browning, blank corner of flyleaf cut out and underl.).

Contemp. overl. vellum, spine with 4 raised bands (sl. discoloured).

Second French edition (1st 1567) by the French geographer Nicolay (1517-1583), royal geographer sent by Henri II to Constantinople to join Gabriel d'Aramon's mission to Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent in 1551 to explore the possibility of an Ottoman - French alliance. Ill. with 60 full-page woodcuts by Anton van Leest after Danet with very early representations of the inhabitants of Algiers, Tripoli, the Barbary Coast, Turkey, Greece, Persia and Armenia. Including also a plate of the self-mutilating dervish. Nicolay's work forms "the prototype for Levantine costume plates" (Atabey 429) and became the basis of European ethnographies for the next two centuries. Title within typographical woodcut border, historiated woodcut initials and typographical ornaments.
