Rare revised edition (1st: 1593-94) of Lipsius' successful treatise on the cross in antiquity, printed in 1500 copies. Ill. with 18 engr. in text and 1 engr. full-page (14 etchings with crucified people and 5 others with various representations) by Pieter van der Borcht, and 1 woodcut in text figuring an image of a Roman axe. Engr. mark on title. The etchings used for the 1595 edition were reworked to illustrate our edition, although two of them were omitted, and one (p. 89) replaced.
