8vo: 36 pp. (toned, title margin stained).
18th-c. quarter leather, marbled paper on covers, gilt flat spine, green silk marker (rubbed, def. at head and tail). Very good copy on coarse paper.
Rare treatise "contre les déguisements, mascarades et spectacles" by the French lawyer Savaron (1566-1622). Savaron asserts that the Devil invented masks, and that evidence of this can be found in the fact that the Latin "larva" means both "mask" and "demon". Woodcut mark on title.
