623. [Italian school]

Follower of RENI, Guido

Madonna and child.

17th. c

Oil on canvas, 92 x 79 cm, unsigned (canvas lined, varnish only slightly cracked. Inspection under ultraviolet light revealed no significant recent intervention, overall the canvas appears to be largely untouched and in very good condition).

Under a historical gilt frame with floral motifs.

Magnificent representation of the Holy Virgin with the Christ-child on her lap, offering him a rose (Madonna del Rosario-type). The rose is a common marian symbol; its red colour can be seen as a prefiguration of the blood and sacrifice of Christ. The figure type, the counter-reformatist theme and the use of colorite comes close to the saints by the Italian Baroque painter Guido Reni (1575-1642), whose style may have influenced this artist.
