Description du lot

Leiden, 15 [17?] September 1451 [1452?]

1 f. (ca. 22,5 x 30,5 cm), on vellum, in Latin, professionally written in black ink. Red wax seal for the larger part preserved, and attached with pins.

In excellent condition.

Very rare indulgence issued by Nicholas of Cusa (1401-1464), Cardinal-Priest of S. Pietro in Vincoli, and papal legate to Germany from 1446. In 1448 he was appointed Cardinal by Nicholas V (Pope 1447-1451). During his "Great Legation" of 1450-1452 he visited numerous churches in North-Western Europe. In Leiden he supported the newly-built chapel of the "White Nuns", inaugurated in 1450. The building was later demolished, and the remains were integrated in the present "Academiegebouw" of Leiden University. There is a problem with the date: the document reads "die mercurij quintadecima mensis Septembr." of 1451. In 1451 wednesdays were either 10 or 17 September. Wednesday 15 September 1452, however, perfectly fits. A scribal error (copy of 1451 text made in 1452)?
