8vo: [8]-200 ff. (light dampstaining, sl. foxing, blank upper corner of f. 53 torn off).

17th-c. vellum, flat spine with gilt-lettered title, ink title on lower edge.

First Italian edition by Benedetto Egio of Spoleto, of the 4 first books of the "History of the Wars", initiated by Emperor Justinian I, recounting the Persian and Vandalic wars. The "History of the Wars" is Procopius' most important work. He accompanied the Byzantine General during Justinian's wars. Procopius of Caesaera (ca. 500-ca. 565) was the principal Byzantine historian of the 6th century and is the primary source for the rule of Justinian. Large printer's mark on title.
Bound with: [Idem] - De gli edifici di Giustiniano imperatore. Di greco in volgare tradotti per Benedetto Egio da Spoleti [...]. Ibidem, 1547. [6]-[1 bl.]-59 ff. (a8 & H4 (blanks) missing; same condition). First Italian edition by Benedetto Egio of this work, commissioned by Justinian I, on the major buildings in Constantinople and the Eastern Empire built on the orders of Justinian. The first book is on Hagia Sophia. It also deals with buildings in Europe, Asia and North Africa (esp. Alexandria). Large printer's marks on title and verso of last leaf.
