Microscopic calligraphed copy of some Dutch biblical quotations and prayers.

Vellum leaf, ca. 20 x 15 cm, written on 1 side. In very good condition.

Signed "Carel Gelliers" in bottom right corner. Extr. rare specimen of the art of this Leeuwarden writing master. Expertly written in a microscopically small size. Quotations from i.a. Exodus and Deuteronomy, some written in a format inspired by the Tablets of Stone (ca. 7,5 x 3,5 cm), others within in a square (ca. 3 x 3 cm) within a circle itself within a rectangle. Borders gilt decorated, with calligraphic penwork corner pieces and gilt dots. The writing master of the Leeuwarden Latin School Carel Gelliers (fl. 1636-1644) was the author of a popular primer "Trap der jeugd" (1640). Examples of his calligraphic skills almost never appear on the market.
