Description du lot
Mantua, Antonio Lafreri, ca. 1560
Engraving, 29,5 x 17 cm (platemark), 39,5 x 27 cm (paper), laid paper, signed in the plate at Apollo's feet "G. MF" and in plaque "Fran. Bol. In." (laid down on paper mount with left side lifting).
Mythological scene with Apollo and Pan making music, seen from below. Part of a series of 4 plates (the other 3 plates each depicting the Muses), made after designs made by Primaticcio (1541-1582) for the ceiling of the Galerie d'Ulysse at Fontainebleau in 1541. The gallery was destroyed in 1739, making these prints the sole testimony of their existence. Nice impression with even toning of the rare 4th state (of 5), published by Antonio Lafreri (address partly erased in the plate). "The Lafreri state is extremely rare, indicating that he owned the plates for a number of years but chose not to print many impressions." (Boorsch, p. 127).
