Description du lot

Weimar & Leipzig, Cranach Press for Insel Verlag, 1926

Large 4to.

Hand-bound brown calf, covers with double ruled frame and corner pieces, gilt-titled flat spine, top edge gilt, cloth-covered slipcase (sm. min. scratches, joints sl. rubbed, spine sl. discoloured). Good copy.

Beautiful edition illustrated with 43 woodcuts in text (incl. 1 on title) by Aristide Maillol and woodcut initials designed and cut by Eric Gill. Edition limited to 294 numb. copies. One of 250 on hand-made paper produced by Gaspard Maillol at Monval close to Marly-le-Roi (n. 3). Latin and German texts facing each other.
This edition was conceived and designed by
Count Harry Kessler (1868-1937), in the spirit of the Venetian impressions of the 15th century and printed with type especially engraved for this edition, after the characters used by Nicolas Jenson in Venice in 1470. "A classical spirit pervades the finished volume, from the harmonious composition of the type to the slightly archaic grace of the figures" (The artist and the book). The Cranach Press, founded by Kessler in Weimar, is famous for the great craftmanship and extreme care with which the books were designed and printed. Between 1913 and 1932, the Press published 53 books. The present volume is one of its main works, a landmark in modern German book production.
Ref. The artist and the book 172.
