Contemp. blind-stamped embossed pigskin over wood, edges bevelled inside, spine with 5 raised bands, marbled edges, tooled metal corner and central pieces, metal clasps (on leather tongues) and catches. Excellent, well-preserved copy, very rare in this mint condition.

Bern ed. of the Piscator Bible, the first Calvinist German Bible to be printed in Germany: 4 times in Herborn 1602-1654, followed by some 35 editions as "Staatenbibel" in the Swiss Canton Bern. “Piscator hatte seine Bibel nach dem Urtext volkstümlich ausgelegt und Markus 8,12 wie folgt übersetzt: "Ich sage euch, wann diesem Geschlecht ein Zeichen wird gegeben werden, so straffe mich Gott". Red and blue pencil marks to the Book of Revelation. - Long German inscription by "Teutsch Schulmeister" Franz Samuel Müller (1725-1801), dated 14 April 1761, thanking the city magistrate of Zofingen (Bern) for the "schöne neue Bibel" they acquired at his request for use in the "Knabenschul" (front flyleaf, with printed transcript pasted on facing endpaper). - On front cover painted arms of Zofingen with initials "ZO" and date "1761".
