Lot description

Painting, gouache, gold leaf, 19,5 x 23,5 cm, vellum 19,5 x 25,5 cm; Latin ms. text on verso.

Very nice miniature representing S. Hubertus kneeling in front of a crucifix standing between the antlers of a stag; in the background, some other hunters and a magnificent medieval castle. The scene is inscribed in a large initial "D" painted in grey, blue and red on crackled burnished gold ground and extending in the left margin. With 5 lines of manuscript text from the Office of the Virgin and 3 smaller initials in red or blue on verso. Obviously by the "Spanish Forger", a still unidentified artist who, at the end of the 19th and the start of the 20th century, created a large number of forgeries of medieval miniatures; originally thought to be Spanish, it is now believed that he may have been French, working in Paris. His works are much sought after.
