18th-c. English calf, covers ruled with a blind roll-stamp and gilt fillets with tools in the corners, blind and gilt orn. spine on raised bands with gilt title and date, gilt fillet on the borders, gilt inside dentelle, a.e.g. (rebacked, head repaired, scratches, borders rubbed).
Later edition (1st ed.: Lyon 1567) of this travel account to the Near East by de Nicolay (1517-1583). Ill. with 60 full-page woodcut plates by A. van Londerseel depicting inhabitants of Turkey, Algeria, Libya, Greece, Persia, etc. The illustrations are of particular importance in that they were among the first to represent accurately the costumes of the Near East.
