Lot description

Amsterdam, Wilhelmus Koning, 1716

2 series in 60 etchings (1st series: list, 1/24 including title, A-E 1st part.-- 2nd series: list, 25/50, A-C 2nd part), TC 17 x 11 cm on laid paper, +/- 22,5 x 14 cm (foxing and small stains passim, small lack of paper at the corner of the title-leaf).

Contemporary binding 8vo: full speckled calf, ribbed gilt decorated spine and red leather label (joints partially restored, some coins dulled).

Rare complete suites of the grotesque figures edited by Koning, engraver and printseller in Amsterdam. The 60 etchings are divided in 2 series preceded by an engraved list of the plates probably after Jacob Folkema (1692-1767), who signs some etchings with the monogram ICF (Isidor Cooridon Fidelle, his pseudonym). Includes 27 etchings by Jooste van Sasse (1716-1736),- 8 by P. van Buysen junior,- 5 by Andries van Buysen senior,- 9 by Fopje Folkema (1690-1752) and 5 by his sister Anna (1695-1768),- 2 by Isaak Ledeboer (1691-1757),- 1 by Jacob Keyser,- and 1 unsigned. Only the list of the 1st part is entitled: "Ordre et Liste de l'oeuvre qui a pour titres Le monde plein de Fols, ou le Théâtre des Nains enrichi d'un discours chêné de leurs personages". Entitled in French, then in Dutch, captioned with ironic quatrains (in French, Dutch and German), the etchings depict dwarves, vaguely inspired by Callot's grotesques, caricaturing various "types" of the time: the upstart, the stepmother, the knight, the soldier, the pseudo-wizard, the ugly old woman, the nobles (prince, marquis, count...), the pilgrim, the prospector, the one who thinks he is clever, the one who thinks she is beautiful, etc., all with well-targeted names: "L'amiral général de la Flotte de foin fumant de cett'herbe avec du grand soin", "Le baron de Cherche l'homme sous son large habit", "Le chevalier de l'ordre métaphysique", "Madame Cul-de-Paris qui sert de joie aux amateurs de grosses tettes", etc. There are folio-issues at the same date, with engravings set with large floral or ornamental frames (lists of series set with miniaturized engravings) engraved by P. van Buysen, J. van Sasse, etc., according to i.a. Johan Christop Eullisch. These frames contain in addition a cartouche with sixain and a new bibliographic address (W. Koning), "alwaar met ook dese Kransen sonder en met de Dwergen apart kan beloomen". These suites were published in Augsburg c. 1705/-1715, Amst. 1716 (enlarged ed.) and 1720, and in reduced size in 1775. The copies are different, with or without the lists or the 8 additional plates, bound with other series or a calendar of the months, etc. Ref. Muller 3695 (quotes this 1716-edition as a 4th ed.).- http://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b10501760h.- Brunet III:1822.
