Folio: [4]-303 ff., 82 ll. (lacking final blank; occ. marg. unobtrusive soiling or dampstaining, a few tiny wormholes in first ff., single wormhole in last 5 quires, with sm. wormtracks in last ff.).
Cont. blind-stamped calf over wood, bevelled edges inside, covers with floral stamps within double blind-ruled frame, embossed metal central and corner pieces, blind-stamped spine on 5 raised bands titled in ink, metal clasps and catches, fore-edge titled, leather fore-edge tabs (sl. soiled, tiny wormholes in covers, sm. def. at head, some oxidation on metal pieces, 3 corner pieces incompl., 1 clasp gone, some tabs gone leaving traces). Excellent well-preserved copy.
Beautiful incunable edition of this compilation of papal decrees, by pope Gregory IX (1170-1241), concerning canon law. It is a close reprint of the 1494 edition, with the same number of copies (2300), specified in prefatory note on 5v. Compiled by Raymond of Penaforte at the request of Gregory IX in 1230-34 and promulgated in 1234. Printed in gothic type, in red and black. Basic text in larger type in 2 cols surrounded by smaller type gloss in 2 cols. Some capital spaces with guide letters. Large woodcut printer's device on last f. printed in red.
