Lot description
Folio; 60 pl. (light off-setting on some text ff., occ. spotting or very light soiling rarely touching pl.).
Mod. green long-grained shagreen, covers decorated with a gilt roll and a blind-stamped roll, gilt-orn. spine with raised bands, a.e.g. (sm. part of gilt roll very lightly smudged at right side of front cover).
Based on Solvyns' earlier work "The manners, customs and dresses of the Hindoos", this rare work (1st ed. 1804) is complete with the 60 hand-coloured engravings after his originals. Solvyns (1760-1824) was a Flemish painter and printmaker who lived in India from 1791 to 1803. Accompanying text in English and French. Some plates watermarked "J. Whatman 1834".
