3 vol., 4to: [4]-104-483, [4]-484/932, [4]-933/1280-184 pp. (occ. marg. spotting, sm. tear in each of 3 large folding pls vol. II (1 underlaid)).

Cont. calf, gilt spines on 5 raised bands, brown leather title labels (some scratches, endpapers lifted). Very good copy.

First and only Dutch edition of the collected works of the Dutch physician and scientist F. Ruysch (1638-1731) in the years 1691-1732. The work includes a biography of Ruysch by J.F. Schreiber and lists the contents of the enormous collection of anatomical samples in his famous "Anatomisch cabinet", then a popular tourist attraction in Amsterdam. Engr. ill.: beautiful frontisp. by Cornelis Huyberts showing Ruysch' cabinet, full-page portrait of Ruysch, 7 ill. in text and 132 plates, some folding, incl. 3 large folding pls showing remarkable compositions featuring plants, shells and small human skeletons. 2 woodcut pl. The "Wunderkammer" of Ruysch, as described shelf by shelf in vol. II and consisting of 12 cabinets, was purchased in 1717 by czar Peter the Great, as was the famous cabinet of curiosities of A. Seba, another Amsterdam scientist. Together, these collections formed the first public museum in Russia, the Kunstkammer of St. Petersburg.
