Lot description

4to: [8]-326 pp. (long sl. damp stain, part. sl. age-toned, occ. foxing, occ. marg. stain).

Contemp. limp vellum, ink-titled flat spine, red spr. edges (mod. title written in pencil on front board).

Rare second edition, revised and enlarged (1st: 1600), of a work showing the excellence of women against the defects and vices of men. Lucrezia Marinella responds to the work of Giuseppe Passi "I donneschi difetti" (1599), in which he says women are weak and depraved. With examples she shows that women are more virtuous than men and, based on ancient and modern texts, that the defects of men are more worse than women's. In this ed., she also criticised the negative portraits of women depicted by Boccaccio, Speroni, Torquato and Ercole Tasso in their works, all of them making a general assumption based on the behaviour of one woman. Women's rights and equality was the major focus of the Venetian Lucrezia Marinella (1571-1653), however she wrote about various subjects (philosophy, religion, mythology, etc.).
Ref. BGL III:337. - STC Italy II:539.
Prov. Monastery libr. (17th-c. ms. entry). - Joaquin Gomez de la Cortina, Marquess of Morante (1808-1868), famous Mexican-Spanish bibliophile who unlike his bookpl. mentions "et amicorum", never lent his books (armorial bookpl.).
