Lot description

Folio: 52 pl. (sm. defects).

Contemp. mottled calf, percaline covers (above original mottled calf), spine with raised bands and title label "Atlas De Banck" (used).

Rare composite volume with 52 charts and plates from C. Cook's first voyage only. Extracted from J. Hawkesworth's "Relation des voyages entrepris par ordre de sa Majesté britannique [...]" (Paris, Saillant et Nyon, Panckoucke, 1774). Incl. large travel maps, coastal maps and nice topographical views, local scene and wildlife finely engraved by Bénard, Le Veau, Patas, etc. (part 1 and 2 with each 16 pl., part 3 with 17 pl. and part 4 with 3 pl.). Atlas de Banck covered Cook's three voyages with the 206 pl. of the French translations published in 1 comprehensive volume or in a 3-volume set. It has no title at the beginning, but there is usually a title for the plates of the Third Voyage. Given that this copy is most likely the first part of the 3-volume set, a title is obviously not present.
