Cont. overl. vellum, flat spine titled in ink (sl. soiled). Very good, clean copy.

First edition of this biography of Frederick Hendrick of Nassau, Prince of Orange (1584-1647) by I. Commelin (1598-1676). Engr. ills: allegorical title with a battle scene in cartouche, by J. v. Meurs, portrait of F. Hendrick of Nassau, 33 double-page plates (some folding) showing views, military scenes or city-plans of "Laach", "Groll", "Bergen op Zoom en Steenbergen", "Wesel", "Thienen", "Sas van Gent", etc. and a large folding plate depicting Frederick Hendrick's funeral procession. Most of the plates depict his military exploits in the Low Countries and those of his admirals in America: e.g. "Afbeeldinghe in wat maniere den Admirael Pieter Adriaensen ita twee rycke Honduras vaerders verovert", Piet Heyn's capture of the Silver Fleet, "Villa D. Olinda D. Pernambuca", "Zee schlach voor Duynkercken door Marten H. Tromp anno 1638", "Veroveringe van Rio Grande in Brasil anno 1632", etc. Our copy has three added double-page plates by D. Stoop, etched copies out of a 1652 ed.: "Graef Ian van Nassou geslaghen en gevanghen anno 1630" (see Muller (Historieplaten) 1662), "Veroveringee van Thienen anno 1635" (Muller 1735) and "Don Cantelmo tot Burgerhout by Antwerpen geslagen anno 1643" (Muller 1873).
