With an extremely detailed taxonomy part

1135. [Zoology]

Natuurlyke historie of uitvoerige beschryving der dieren, planten en mineraalen, volgens het samenstel van den heer Linnaeus. Met naauwkeurige afbeeldingen.

Amsterdam, F. Houttuyn, 1761-1785

37 vol., 8vo; 296 pl., of which 291 fold. (2 sm. tears in pl. 16 in vol. 2, some, mostly quite light, marg. dampstaining, some spotting).

Contemp. polished half calf, speckled boards, flat spines (bindings a bit rubbed, some fraying at heads, tails of 6 vol. toned).

Complete, rare originally hand-coloured set of 37 vol. with 296 finely hand-coloured engr. pl. (several very large, double folded) - of the main Dutch natural history encyclopedia of the 18th c. compiled by the Dutch medical doctor and naturalist Martinus - or Maarten - Houttuyn (1720-1798) and often referred to as the Linnaeus Houttuyn ed. The 3 sections are divided as follows: section I: Zoology in 18 vol. with 143 pl.; section II: Botany in 14 vol. with 105 pl., illustrating 275 species of plants and "including well over 100 new species of plants" (Stafleu); section III: Minerals in 5 vol. with 48 pl. As noted by Stafleu, "The taxonomic part of the book is extremely detailed and contains a wealth of incidental information not brought together in this form elsewhere", not even by Linnaeus himself. Includes the 30-p. addition in vol. 8. An attractive set regarding both the bindings and contents.
