Contemp. calf, gilt-decorated covers and spines with 7 bands (sm. tr. of use).
Complete 1st ed., largely based on the memoirs of one of King Louis XIV’s most successful generals, François-Henri de Montmorency, Duke of Piney-Luxembourg, and covering his last 5 campaigns in the Spanish Netherlands from 1690 until his death in 1694. With 2 engr. titles, one by J.N. Tardieu after Ch. Eisen, the other by Martinet, 149 engr. maps, plans and orders of battle incl. these of Luxembourg's major victories at Fleurus, Mons, Namur, Steenkerke and Neerwinden, and several in-text engr. after Ch. Eisen. A luxurious as well as meticulous cartographic archive of the man who sent so many captured flags to be hung in Paris Cathedral that he was called the "tapissier" of Notre Dame.
