Contemp. quarter sheep, speckled paper over boards, richly gilt orn. spines with 5 raised bands and red & black title labels (corners bumped, joints rubbed, sm. def. at heads & tails). Good, complete set.

First and only edition of the Dutch translation (orig. London 1743-45) of this important travel account in the Near and Middle East by the English writer R. Pococke (1704-1765). Lavishly illustrated with 205 engraved maps, plans and views (mostly folding) showing tombs, statues, costumes, pyramids, fossils, plants, inscriptions, ruins, theatres, temples, including large folding maps of Egypt, the Levant, Cyprus, Crete, Asia Minor, Sea of Marmara, Greece and the Aegean Sea, the Bosphorus and the Exodus ("Reis der Israelieten uit Egypte door de woestijn naar Kanaan volgens de nieuwste waarnemingen van Shaw, Pococke en Niebuhr, door R. Schutte" (P. Mol, 1784)). "Pococke travelled in the eastern Mediterranean from 1737 to 1740, visiting Greece, Asia Minor, Egypt and the Holy Land. His work achieved a great success during his lifetime, with many editions and translations" (Atabey). "Described by Gibbon as of "superior learning and dignity"" (Blackmer).
