Lot description

Venice, N. Jenson, 28 June 1480

Folio: [272 (of 323)] ff., 55-56 ll., 2 col., Gothic types (ff. [5-7, 13, 19-20, 22, 31-33, 41-48, 55-57, 74, 90-99, 101-102, 109, 111-113, 187, 198, 212-215, 228, 244, 251-252, 263, 308-309] missing, f. [1] half cut without loss, occ. spotting and soiling, light water stains in margins, rare contemp. ms. annot.).

Netherlandish contemp. calf over bevelled wooden boards, covers with rectangular ruled border frames and lozenge-shaped central ruled frame with sm. tools inside (Christ, symbols of Evangelists, Agnus Dei, double-headed eagle, heart pierced by an arrow, flower, and the letters "Fr" with slash on the "r"; tools which could be used by a bindery of the Brethren of the Common Life), spine with raised bands, modern metal clasps and catches (spine and corners repaired, covers with scratches, modern flyleaves). Despite the modern spine and the ff. missing, still an interesting and sound copy with large margins.

Part 2 (of 4) of the famous "Summa theologica" by the Archbishop of Florence Antoninus (1389-1459), ed. by Franciscus Moneliensis. It is considered as one of most extensive works on moral theology of the 15th century. Printed with the elegant and highly legible Gothics of Nicolas Jenson, one of the first printers of Venice. The four parts of the "Summa theologica" were printed between 1477 and 1480 (I. 15 Dec. 1479, II. 28 June 1480, III. 1477, IV. 18 Apr. 1480). Decoration: red and blue initials with penwork extending into marginal decoration, red initials and capitals touched in red. With contemp. leaf markers.
