Lot description

Middelburg, J. Meertens (for A. van Someren, Amsterdam), 1696

Folio: [12]-774-[4]-11-[13] pp. (ff. E3-4 loose, local soiling on pp. 753-758 and last 2 ff.).

Contemp. calf (front joint splitting), gilt spine with 6 raised bands (tiny def. at head & tail), brown leather title label. Good copy.

First and only edition of this monumental historical and topographical description on Zeeland by the Dutch lawyer and historian M. Smallegange (Goes bapt. 1624-1710 Goes). The second part never appeared. Lavishly illustrated with engravings: title by Joseph Mulder, arm. mark on title, nice arm. headpiece, an arm. initial "Z", 1 map in-text (p. 209), 3 folding or double-page maps ("Naeukeurige nieuwe land-caert des Graefschaps Zeeland", "Francorum primae sedes" and "Caerte van Zeeland, gelyk dat gelegen was in 't jaer 1274"), 3 full-page pl. showing antiquities and coins and 79 views or plans of cities or villages (65 double-page, 9 folding, 5 full-page; showing i.a. Middelburg, Zierikzee, Goes, Tholen, Vlissingen, Veere, St Maartensdijk), mansions (incl. Popkensburgh p. 668 not in the list of plates), domains, castles, ruins, forts of frontier towns (Hulst, Sas van Gent, Bergen op Zoom, Axel, Lillo, Liefkenshoek, Sluis, etc.). Bound at the end - and not present in all copies - a "Besluit" (publ. in 1704), the index, "Byvoegselen tot de Cronyk van Zeeland" and "Beschryving van den Zeelandschen adel", complete with the armorial folding plate "Zeeland veredelt" by J. Mulder after G. de Lairesse and 5 armorial double-page plates (bound as 1 large folding pl. and 3 double-page pl.) containing more than 1.000 coats of arms. The Cronyk was finished in 1696, but only appeared in 1700. The years of delay were caused by disagreements between the Zeeland cities and the States of Zeeland. Typographical title in red and black.
Ref. Haitsma Mulier/VdLem 445d. - STCN (i.a. BL).
Prov. Adrien Xavier de Ghellinck (1702-1779), knight, Lord of Elseghem (bookpl.).
