The Vesalius of horses
1397. [Zoology - Horses]
RUINI, Carlo
2 parts in 1 vol., folio: [22]-257-[7], [10]-307-[15] pp. (browned, tears in X1 and hole in Ccc6 repaired, both with sm. text loss).
Later half calf (sl. dam. at head), covered with a leaf from an early printed book. Very good copy.
Extremely rare German translation by Peter Uffenbach (1566-1635) of "Dell' anatomia, e dell' infermità del cavallo" (Bologna 1598) by Carlo Ruini (1530-1598), a pioneer Italian work on the anatomy and diseases of the horse. Ill. with 64 full-page woodcut ill., "inspired by those in Vesalius's De humani corporis fabrica (1543)" (Garrison-Morton), including some which are truly spectacular showing dissected horses. Remarkably enough, the Bolognese aristocrat and senator Ruini was not a physician, but a horse lover and riding enthousiast. Small woodcut mark on titles. Large mark at the end. General title in red and black.
