Lot description

Troyes, N. Paris, April 1545

Folio: clj (= 151)-[1 bl.]-clij (= 152) ff. (numerous traces of use: soiled and stained, most margins strengthened, some ff. underlaid and with partial loss of music, hole in printer’s mark).

Cont. blind-tooled calf over wood, spine on 6 raised bands, later covered with suede protection strengthened at joints with metal strip, leather girdle with metal fastening pcs (repaired, with original leather pasted on later covers, embossed catch gone). In all a good complete copy, evidently used for its purpose.

Extr. rare (3rd recorded copy?) ante-Tridentine Cistercian Antiphonary. Entirely printed in red & black with 4-line musical notation. Title within elaborate woodcut border, incl. woodcut mark. Ill. with 13 woodcuts in text. Decorative initials, some grotesque. This copy at one time (probably in the 18th c.) ended up in the Southern Netherlands, as is testified by some manuscript additions with Dutch headings e.g. in Pt. II f. 65 "Op S. Jacobs dach in de vesperen" or 86 "S. Bernard". Numerous strips with manuscript additions or corrections pasted on, i.a. a 4-page "Officium de S. Bernardo" bound between ff. 80-81 (Pt. II). Ref. Betz (Troyes 16me s.) Paris 18 = Pettegree FB 66311 (2: Troyes, Warschau). - Not in Adams, BnF, STC French (BL), WorldCat. Prov. 18th-c. manuscript additions with Dutch heading [Southern Netherlands]. - Libr. stamp of Westmalle Abbey.
