Lot description

Amsterdam, Claes Jansz. Visscher, 1st half 17th c

Engraving, 21,7 x 27,0 cm, laid paper, signed in the plate in the lower margin at left: "Ioannes Breugel inventor" and right: "CJVisscher excudit", numbered 1 at bottom right and serial mark H at top left (two small vertical cuts at top centre).

Under passe-partout and gilt wooden frame (not studied outside frame). Platemark and wide margins visible.

First print from a series of 4 on the parable of the Good Samaritan. Subject identified in the lower margin: "Caeditur muasus grassante latrone Viator." (Luke 10:30). The figures at left copied after an engraving by Crispijn de Passe after Hans Bol (cf. Hollstein XV.140.1).
