1033. [Egypt]

ORTELIUS, Abraham

Aegyptus antiqua.

[Antwerp, Plantin Press, 1584-1592]

Engr., on 2 sheets, together ca. 49,5 x 79,5 cm, old hand-coloured (a bit undulated and lower part of central folding spotted (moulded?)).

Framed (not studied outside frame).

Ortelius' own two-sheet map of Ancient Egypt, in a 1st st. ("trisu" in the text block in the lower left). While his modern maps were compilations of others endeavours, the historical maps were very much his own work. This stunning map of Egypt is regarded as "an outstanding example of early scientific research on Egypt". In 1595, it was replaced by a one sheet map.
